HISTORY OF HIP
In 2009, Finger Furniture (“Fingers”), one of the largest and most respected privately held retail furniture companies in America faced a very difficult situation.The United States economy was in the clutches of one of the worst financial downtowns in history. Consumers were shell shocked; family finances were in ruins and demand for large ticket discretionary goods was extremely weak. Fingers had just completed a very aggressive expansion which included several new stores and a new distribution center.Along with this expansion came a tremendous amount of debt.Rodney Finger, President and CEO of Fingers, faced with plummeting sales and insurmountable debt, began a process of reorganizing the company’s operations.This process eventually led to the selling of assets, closing of stores and the winding down of Finger’s operations. As part of this process, Rodney hired several of the furniture industry’s leading promotional companies to assist him in this effort. As time passed, Rodney became increasingly frustrated by the fact that the promotional companies he hired were more interested in maximizing their profits at Fingers expense than in maximizing the return of the wind down. In 2011, one of the promotional companies Rodney hired assigned John Dixon as the manager of Finger Furniture’s largest location. During that time, John demonstrated a very high level of honesty, integrity and skill. Rodney and John became fast friends.Rodney recognized a genuine need for promotional/sales consulting companies in the furniture industry and John was far and away the most competent and honest sales manager Rodney had ever worked with.A partnership was born and HIP was created by John and Rodney out of the common experience with Fingers.Rodney and John share the belief that promotional/sales consulting firms can play a key role in the success of the retail furniture industry and the viability of privately held independent furniture retailers. Rodney and John believed and have proved that there is an important role for a promotional sales company that exists to serve the retailers they are hired to assist, not maximize their profits at the retailer’s expense.
